Our 2023-24 “Seed to Plate” Education programme is now OPEN for applications.
Cae Tan is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Project based on Gower. Established in 2015, we grow and supply fresh, seasonal produce to 130 local households. We are a not for profit, community organisation and welcome volunteers and train growers to set up their own CSA’s.
Our dedicated education officer has received funding to deliver our successful Sustainable Schools programme and has availability for two, committed primary schools who are looking to improve their school grounds and build staff knowledge around growing food. No experience necessary, only a strong commitment.
The programme aims to:
- Reconnect young people and families with their food and the land
- Reflect on food choices and the impact it has on the climate and biodiversity crisis, personal health and our communities wellbeing
- Support schools to embed food growing into the curriculum and provide teacher training
- Inspire young people to consider employment in local food production
Programme Outline
Our Seed to Plate project teaches pupils how to grow ingredients to make their own pizzas and soups. Using a variety of collaborative games, hands-on activities and discussions, our education officer delivers sessions within school grounds and at Cae Tan’s field. It is directly linked to the new school curriculum and is delivered by a qualified teacher with 20 years’ experience in environmental education.
It is only available to primary schools located in Swansea with an above average Free School Meal percentage. Pupils must be in years 3,4 or 5 with a class or year group no larger than 40.
The holistic programme includes:
- 5 x half days teaching sessions at your school looking at the themes of pollination, climate change and creating a micro school farm
- Full day at the Cae Tan field meeting the team, tasting fresh produce, helping with farm jobs
- Full day at the Gower Heritage Centre for a historical tour and making bread
- Healthy Pizza making day for up to 180 pupils
- Soup making Day for the class
Overall the programme costs £2400 , per class, to deliver.
